Canada: A rare beacon of light for the UNTOC Review Mechanism
Canada has become the first country in the world to publish its responses to the self-assessment questionnaire for the United Nations Convention Against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the Protocols Thereto. The self-assessment questionnaire forms the basis on which countries are reviewed by their peers, who provide their own comments before a jointly agreed list of ‘observations’.

Following the CCPCJ workplan, thematic discussions on Pillar III of the Kyoto Declaration: Promoting the Rule of Law will be held from 21 to 23 September in Vienna in a hybrid format. UNODC Civil Society Unit is inviting applications for an online and asynchronous training “Stakeholder Engagement for the Implementation of the UN Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (SE4U)”. The overall objective of this training is to improve the capacity of civil society organizations, academia and the private sector to contribute to the implementation of the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and its Review Mechanism in accordance with Resolution 9/1 of the Conference of the Parties (COP) and to prepare them for constructive dialogue with government authorities and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

UNODC has recently launched its new five-year strategy, covering 2021-25. Recognizing that a key to successful implementation of this Strategy will be the expanded use of partnerships with a broad range of stakeholders, the online meeting on February 25th will provide a briefing to Civil Society partners. The webinar series will explore and present alternatives to de-funding the police and also to the brutality and enforcement-focused mandate for policing. Policing should be reframed within a concept of systemic urban safety, as one amongst a transversal set of mandates.

This virtual event aims to launch a new UNODC publication entitled “Female victims of tracking for sexual exploitation as defendants: A case law analysis”. The case-law analysis will be presented in a panel discussion with representatives of international organisations and criminal justice practitioners, in presence of the donor, the Kingdom of Sweden.
