Study Abroad Program on Transnational Organized Crime

Jack Ransom, an intern for the Alliance of NGOs on crime prevention and criminal justice, attended and assisted in the Study Abroad Program on Transnational Organized Crime. During the program, Jack was exposed to a variety of topics related to criminology, including cybercrime, migrant smuggling, drug trafficking, and more. He had the opportunity to learn from professionals in the field and gain firsthand exposure to law enforcement operations and strategies. Jack’s experience at the UNODC Summer School was both enriching and transformative, significantly enhancing his understanding of transnational crime. He highlights his learning and experiences in the school, emphasizing the invaluable insights he gained from the diverse array of experts and the connections he made that will be beneficial for his future career in criminology.

At the same time, the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC) and the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) have many overlaps and linkages, as do their Conferences of Parties and review processes.

The paper analyses international, regional, and national legal frameworks, emphasizing a paradigm shift to address the complexities of torture definitions. The comparative overview of anti-torture laws reveals diverse approaches, advocating for a victim-centric, inclusive definition. The conclusion calls for broader legal frameworks and international collaboration, presenting recommendations to reshape our approach to combatting non-State torture. This paper serves as an advocacy tool, urging stakeholders to contribute actively to the eradication of non-State torture and the protection of human dignity.

We welcome proposals that address the scientific areas and the various issues listed above. Scholars, practitioners and officials are invited to submit such proposals (including an outline and a detailed abstract of up to 500 words) by sending an email to mariarita.piraino@unimi.it by 30 November 2023. Successful applicants will be notified by 15 December 2023. Speakers whose paper proposals are selected should be prepared to submit a draft paper (between 15,000 and 17,000 words, including footnotes) by 15 March 2024. All proposals and final papers must be in English.
