High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development

HIGH LEVEL POLITICAL FORUM

The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), through its outcome on "The Future We Want", established the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in 2012.

The HLPF is the central United Nations platform for the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level. It is the apex of the architecture for follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda established by the Agenda  itself and General Assembly resolution 70/299.

Under the General Assembly resolution 67/290, the Forum meets annually under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council for eight days, including a three-day ministerial segment and every four years for two days at the level of Heads of State and Government, under the auspices of the General Assembly. The Forum’s first meeting was held on 24 September 2013. It replaced the Commission on Sustainable Development, which had met annually since 1993.

The Forum adopts intergovernmentally negotiated political declarations and conducts regular reviews of the Sustainable Development Goals

The HLPF 2023 under the auspices of the General Assembly - the second SDG Summit will be held in September 2023.

The HLPF 2023, convened under the auspices of the Economic and Social Council, will be held from Monday, 10 July, to Friday, 14 July 2023 in New York. The high-level segment of the Council, including the three-day ministerial segment of the HLPF, will be held from Monday, 17 July, to Thursday, 20 July 2023. The theme will be "Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels”. The HLPF in 2023 will review in-depth SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11 and 17. It will be a pre-summit for preparing the SDG Summit to be held in September 2023.

Voluntary national reviews (VNRs) of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda will be carried out at the HLPF 2023.
