This meeting will focus on reflections on developments at the 12th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime (UNTOC COP12), which took place in Vienna in October, and where the issue of crimes that affect the environment received a lot of attention in discussions and side events.
Notably, this was the first time that Indigenous Peoples were represented at an UNTOC COP12 and spoke about the impact of these crimes on their livelihoods.
We will discuss the Resolution on “Enhancing measures to prevent and combat crimes that affect the environment within the scope of the UNTOC” championed by Brazil, France and Peru and adopted at this COP, which calls for the creation of an open-ended intergovernmental expert group on these crimes, with a mandate to identify gaps in the international legal framework and consider potential responses, including the merits of any additional protocol to the UNTOC.
Join us to also hear about future opportunities for engagement, including the 33rd reconvened session of the CCPCJ, the thematic discussion on Promoting international cooperation and technical assistance, regional preparatory meetings ahead of the Crime Congress, and the 34th CCPCJ.
We hope to see as many of you there as possible!
The Co-Chairs of the Working Group (Linda Witong Abrahm & Lisa Hartevelt)
